MIDOCs, an innovative work project aimed at addressing the physician shortage in Michigan, is currently seeking 20 resident physicians to participate in its third cohort. Each participating resident physician must commit to practicing in a primary care health professional shortage area (HPSA) during and after training, and is eligible to receive up to $75,000 in loan repayment. With the addition of this third cohort, there will be a total of 52 residents in the MIDOCs program.
The four participating medical schools – Central Michigan University College of Medicine, Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, Wayne State University School of Medicine, and Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine – are working to place residents in their 20 available slots across the specialties of Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, Preventative Medicine, General Surgery, and Pediatrics.
MIDOCs residents are selected through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) process which opens each fall. Medical students are invited to interview in November and December, and ranking takes place in January. MIDOCs positions are filled through the Main Residency Match, which takes place in March, and resident contracts are signed by July. All MIDOCs residency programs meet ACGME requirements.
Additionally, a candidate must meet criteria of the individual institution and residency program qualifications to be reviewed for possible selection for interview for a MIDOCs residency program position. You may review each individual institution’s program at www.michigandocs.org/residencies.
Thanks to the innovative work being done with the help of federal, state and local funding, the MIDOCs program has enabled the State of Michigan to train 52 more primary care doctors than they could have otherwise. Doctors from the first cohort will begin practicing throughout Michigan in July 2022.
MIDOCs is currently working to secure funding for a fourth cohort which could create anywhere from 20 – 48 additional new primary care residency slots in 2022. Learn more at michigandocs.org.
